How do I handle answering questions about salary expectations?
Salary discussions require strategy to avoid anchoring yourself too low or pricing yourself out. Early in the process, deflect: ‘I’d like to learn more about the role and responsibilities before discussing salary. What’s the budgeted range for this position?’ This flips the question back. If they insist on a number, provide a researched range: ‘Based on my research of similar roles in this market, I’m targeting $X to $Y, but I’m flexible depending on the full compensation package and growth opportunities.’ Make sure your range is realistic (use Glassdoor, Salary.com, PayScale) and that the low end is actually acceptable to you – they’ll likely offer near the bottom. If you must share current salary (some states have banned this question), you can: Be honest if comfortable, Politely decline: ‘I’d prefer to discuss this role’s compensation rather than my current salary,’ Include total compensation if it helps: ‘My base is X, but my total comp including bonus and equity is Y.’ Once they make an offer, never accept immediately. Say: ‘Thank you, I’m excited about this opportunity. I’d like to review the full offer details and will get back to you by [specific date].’ This gives you leverage to negotiate. If their offer is low, counter with specific justification: ‘Based on my experience with X and Y, plus market rates for this role, I was hoping for $Z. Can we discuss?’
