What are the key differences between a US resume and European CV?
Resume practices vary significantly by region. United States: Called ‘resume,’ typically 1-2 pages maximum, no photo or personal information (age, marital status, etc.) – these can trigger discrimination laws, chronological format preferred, focus on achievements and results, direct and quantifiable language, references on separate sheet. Continental Europe (Germany, France, etc.): Called ‘CV’ or ‘Lebenslauf,’ typically 2-3 pages, professional photo is EXPECTED, personal information standard: date of birth, nationality, marital status, detailed education section including grades, more formal and comprehensive, may include copies of certificates and diplomas, chronological order (sometimes oldest to newest), language skills section with proficiency levels (A1-C2). References typically ‘available upon request’ rather than listed. Format requirements vary: some countries prefer tables, others narrative.
