What is the Harvard Resume Template?

The Harvard resume template originated from Harvard University’s Office of Career Services. It was designed to help students and alumni present their qualifications in a clean, professional format that hiring managers could quickly scan. Over decades, this format became the industry standard for business, finance, consulting, and corporate roles.

The Harvard format prioritizes:

Clarity over creativity – Clean layout with no distracting graphics
Substance over style – Focus on achievements and results
Consistency – Uniform formatting throughout
ATS optimization – Simple structure that parses correctly

Common Harvard Resume Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Going Over One Page

Harvard format is strictly one page. If you can’t fit everything, you’re including too much. Prioritize ruthlessly.

❌ Adding Graphics or Colors

The Harvard template is intentionally plain. Charts, icons, and colors distract from content and break ATS.

❌ Using Passive Voice

🚀 Prepare for Success

Create a resume that makes recruiters want to interview you!

Create Resume Now →

“Was responsible for…” is weak. Use strong action verbs: “Led,” “Delivered,” “Achieved.”

✅ Quantify Everything

Numbers stand out: “$2M revenue,” “15% cost reduction,” “team of 8.” If you can measure it, include it.

✅ Tailor to Each Job

Even with Harvard format, customize bullet points and keywords for each application.

✅ Proofread Obsessively

One typo can disqualify you. Have multiple people review before submitting.
