Category: ATS Optimization FAQ
What keywords should I include in my resume for ATS optimization?
ATS keywords should come directly from the job description and industry terminology. Read the job posting carefully and identify: hard skills (specific software, programming languages, tools, certifications), industry terminology and buzzwords (Agile, Six Sigma, SEO, ERP), required qualifications (degree requirements, years of experience, licenses), soft skills mentioned multiple times (leadership, communication, collaboration), and specific job responsibilities. Use exact phrases from the job description when accurate – if they say ‘project management,’ use that phrase rather than ‘managed projects.’ Include both acronyms and spelled-out versions (Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Application Tracking System (ATS)). Place keywords naturally throughout your resume: in your professional summary, skills section, and within experience descriptions. Don’t keyword stuff or create hidden white text (ATS can detect this). Industry-specific keywords vary widely: tech resumes need programming languages and frameworks, marketing needs channel expertise and tools, finance needs certifications and regulations. Research job descriptions for your target role across multiple companies to identify common keyword patterns. Update your keywords for each application based on the specific job posting. Remember: keywords get you past the ATS, but compelling content gets you the interview.
